First Selected Source Title: Document Three- Call for Unity Between Black and White
Laborers

2. Write a one-paragraph thesis response to the prompt that uses only your background
knowledge and this one chosen document.

Thesis Response: Cultural conflict was a force shaping U.S society in the 1920s, but it was
starting to diminish compared to previous periods. During the 1920’s, conflicts between
cultures became a large problem throughout all of the U.S. In this document, people of
different backgrounds, races, and classes are being pushed to come together to fight for a
common goal. This shows that, although in this case they were united, there was still great
animosity between the groups. The speaker advocating that different people unite together
does not care for anything other than their rights against capitalist employers. Although they
are uniting which means conflict isn’t as high, they still share no kindness toward each other.
Randolph says they “should combine for no other reason” than that of getting the demands
they want from employers. Once again, this shows that conflict between cultures is improving,
but still helped shape the U.S society in the 1920s.
