To broaden audience appeal, genre hybridity employs a variety of genericconventions. How does genre hybridity play out in two lms of your choosing?
The integration of narrative conventions from major lm genres such as comedy, crime
noir, drama, documentary, horror, melodrama, musical, science ction, and Western is
referred to as genre hybridity. While all lms have at least one prominent genre, a genre
hybrid lm combines two or more genres to form a new genre or sub-genre, or elements
from multiple genres are blended in a single lm. In this way, a genre hybrid lm can
adhere to the characteristics of one genre while incorporating elements from other lm
genres. For example, Farah Khan's Indian lm musical Om Shanti Omincorporates
melodrama, comedy, and comic fantasy into the narrative, while Paul King's lm
Paddington Two combines comedy with drama, mystery, and crime. Film theorist Neale
advocates that in most movies the dominant genre is of greatest importance which is
subsequently supported by other genres. This fusion of familiar tropes and conventions
creates an innovative and more dynamic experience for the viewer. The mixing of genres
in individual lms increases the emotional response of the audience, thereby expanding
the viewer’s appeal of the narrative. To this extent, a genre hybrid lm presents not only
genre familiarity to the audience but subverts their previous understandings or beliefs and
held expectations of the narrative by introducing concepts in surprising and novel ways.
Genres experience a continual process of transition with each new work effectively
reshaping the genre or in uencing the emergence of new genres and sub-genres. Neale
(1999) suggests that individual genres change, evolve and differ by “borrowing” and
“overlapping” (p.172) with another genre creating lm hybrids. These hybrids tend to
merge one kind of generic plot with another narrative such as a romantic comedy or blend
