The topic of this paper is about a woman named Zena Freeman from case study vignette
10-53 (Koocher & Keith-Spiegel, 2016, p. 341) She asked “Macho Mann, Ph.D.” for assistance
with some problems she was having understanding certain concepts in her organizational
psychology class. Macho Mann then made a comment on how women do not belong in the
course she was taking because they were not ‘suited’ to the field. Mann also refused to respond
to her specific questions because of his thoughts and opinion on this (Koocher & Keith-Spiegel,
2016, p. 341)
Introduction: Culture
The professor is unwilling to see past his student as a female and completely
disregarded the fact that his obligation as a professor is to treat every one of his students as
equal no matter the race, sex, age, etc. His main job is to equip them with the best education in
this field as possible and is apparent that his role makes him believe that he is empowered and
superior to his female students because of his position he holds. This not only offends the
female in which he is in conflict with, but also his other students including the males who have
an opinion of him that he believes that females really do not belong in his class or field in
, general. Mr. Mann holds a title he thinks is better than others and portrays himself to others
that his belief is correct. This scenario makes the male students think that they should be the
superior ones to the females in this field and that females should not hold a role beside them.
Introduction: Interactions
Interactions between the roles of a psychologist and client, or researcher and participant
are so important in psychology. They are all influenced by culture and social orientation by how
we learn, adapt, trust, and develop as humans. This also helps with understanding one’s point
of view other than your own personal one. Ethical conduct in psychology entails a method that
is used and can influence an individual, different work sites, and corporations that specialists
operate. These professionals work closely with client/patients to understand their cultural
backgrounds, values, and aspects to better help them in life. This influence informs ethical
conduct in psychology by avoiding ethical challenges that may occur.
Introduction: Supported or Unsupported
The eight-step ethical decision-making model retains a lot of importance because it
explains the detailed method of the APA Code of Ethics, and the rights and responsibilities of
the individual. Mr. Mann in this case, used unsupported decision making when he decided to
not help Zena Freeman with her work after she had asked him to do so (Determine whether the
matter truly involves ethics). Zena’s professor denied the help she asked for in which crosses all
ethical guidelines because she is a female (Consult guidelines already available that might apply
as a possible mechanism for resolution).
He made his decision based on his own beliefs and way of thinking rather than following
the any model of ethics. Zena is now faced with the problem (Pause to consider, as best as
