Paiget’s stages of cognitive development
• Cognitive development means how children think, explore and figure things out.
It is the development of knowledge, skills, problem solving and dispositions,
which help children to think about and understand the world around them. Brain
development is part of cognitive development.
• Cognitive development means the growth of a child's ability to think and reason.
• This growth happens differently from ages 6 to 12, and from ages 12 to 18.
Children ages 6 to 12 years old develop the ability to think in concrete ways.
These are called concrete operations
• Cognitive development is much more than the addition of new facts and ideas to
an existing store of information.
• According to Piaget, our thinking processes change radically, though slowly,
from birth to maturity because we constantly strive to make sense of the world.
• Piaget identified four factors—biological maturation, activity, social experiences,
and equilibration—that interact to influence changes in thinking (Piaget, 1970a).
