The ideologies conveyed through the representation of The Guardian is through the use of
the mode of address because it has a very serious tone and the positioning of the story/text
shows that the Farage story is important and should be the left wing readers main focus.
This is typical of The Guardian as it is a broadsheet so the stories are presented in a lot of
detail so it would attract a more middle/upper class reader. The anchorage used in The
Guardian “shaken and stirred row as Farage is doused with milkshake” represents Farage
negatively which is also emphasized through the long camera shot because it clearly shows
that Farage is humiliated this is typical of The Guardian because they are a left wing
supported newspaper meaning they like to include stories/pictures that portrays the
conservative party in a poor light.
The Guardian uses Hall’s representation theory through the headline “revealed: big rise in
public racism since Brexit vote” the ideology conveyed here is that the broadsheet
newspaper is a strong supporter of the labour party and cares about how political decisions
would affect the public and the future of Britain. Hall’s reception theory can be conveyed in
The Guardian newspaper because a preferred reader would strongly agree with the story
meaning they are likely to be labour supporters and express their opinion of how the
conservative party have failed the public. A negotiated reader would party agree with the
story but some aspects they might disagree on for example the lexis used about how the
“labour party have suffered allegations of islamophobia” this would show a negotiated
reader is likely to be politically in the middle because they might not complete believe in the
story about conservative but partly agree with the allegations about labour. An oppositional
reader would strongly disagree with the whole story because they don’t believe the facts
are true at all and therefore the reader is likely to be a conservative supporter.
The ideologies conveyed are similar in both newspapers because using Gilroy’s theory you
can identify that there is a lack of support from the government when it comes to ethnic
minorities therefore showing a massive failure from the government and that is why people
took the situation into their own hands by attacking Farage to emphasise their frustration.
