Section One:
Question : Critically analyze why the Native American or African American history can (or
cannot) be considered as an integral part of modern history from a global perspective. Begin by
explaining the key features of global history. Next, provide a detailed account of either Native
American or African American history since the 16th and 17th century, and analyze why a global
historical approach provides a useful way of recounting these experiences. In other words, in
what way can these experiences be narrated as a part of modern and global history. Put another
way, reflect on the ways in which global history can highlight the interconnections and divisions
that emerge between the New World (Americas) and old world (Europe and Africa) in the early
modern period. Finally, state your views of the general impact of the European occupation of the
Americas.
Ans:
Yes, I agree that the native American or African-American history can be considered as
an integral part of modern history from a global perspective. To talk about global
history firstly the term global itself has a very defining meaning. Global comes from
Latin word globus which means something that is spherical or rounded, a heavenly body.
This denotation is synonymous to the shape of our planet earth. So global history is the
history of one entity, history of “spaceship earth”. The political, environmental,
evolutionary changes happening for thousands of years thus forming the single global
, history of our spaceship earth. Also in the text Crossing Boundaries: Ecumenical, World,
and Global History Author Bruce Mazlish wrote that “The global history has two
important feature the first one is Globalization and secondly that Global History is
simply about process that are being studied on a global rather than local, national and
regional level”. Other key features of global History are, it has no center, and there is
synergy and synchronicity. The changes, phenomena, that is happening one side of the
world is affecting directly or indirectly other parts of the world. The climate change, the
globalization of culture, lifestyle, technology, decentralized political and social movements
occurring in different region, global trading system, global capitalism. These events affect
every part of the globe and every person on it, and through these impacts of these
changes of events the shape of global history is formed. Another important key feature
of global history is as time goes by the history becomes more richer, resourceful and
informative. I quote from the text Crossing Boundaries: Ecumenical, World, and Global
History [page 49] “A large part of the globe was still in dark. Parts of Africa was
successfully unmapped until the end of 19th century. The poles still existed in unknown
fashion until recent exploration”. With evolution of human beings, civilization our
perspective, vision extended towards the unknown, unexplored globe. Another important
feature of global History is that it is also not predictable as it is largely dependent on
the contingency and uncertainty of human affairs.
Now, analyzing the history of the African Americans from 16th and 17th century, these
historical experiences can be narrated as part of the modern and global history. So, to
deep dive in to why this particular history is modern we need to analyze modernity
first. In the end of 16th century particularly from 1590 the English word Modern were
used to refer something of the present. Not referring to something old, antiquated rather
up to date techniques, innovations, equipment etc. So, it’s apparent that the modern
period of history started at the end of 16th century. Some characteristics of the modern
period, as Anthony Giddens states in his book The Consequences of Modernity that “the
modes of life brought by modernity have swept humans away from all traditional types
of social order, in quite unprecedented fashion. Then, the rapidity of change in
conditions of modernity is extreme. Moreover, With the evolution of modernization
different areas of the globe are drawn into interconnection with one another, waves of
social transformation crash across virtually the whole of the earth’s surface.” Also, in
this book Marx, a classical founder of Sociology points out that in the Modern era the
class struggle would be prominent due to the rise of capitalism, capitalistic order and at
the same time he envisaged the emergence of a more humane social system. Durkheim
another sociologist says that “the further expansion of industrialism would establish a
harmonious and fulfilling social life, through a combination of the division of labor and
individualism.” So, with the word modern 3 words are interconnected they are modernity,
modernism and modernization. The term particularly modernization refers to the process.
The changes, the innovation for the sake of innovation and change. Then the most
