The school constitutes a social institution, and it has been established as an
instrument by society to transfer knowledge, skills and insight to learners in school.
Discuss this statement by referring to the school as socialisation agent in society as
portrayed by functionalism, conflict theory and interpretivism.
1. Introduction to the essay: Indicate the meaning of the school as organisation and
socialisation agent in society. (10)
page 6: Schools are more than institutions for the teaching and learning of school subjects
and play an important role in shaping children’s ability to confine to society. Teachers train
children on different levels of conformity which includes moral, behavioural and cultural
conformity. Socialisation implies the process through which a human being becomes a
member of a society and it takes place in the family, school, community and society.
There are two types of socialisation namely: primary and secondary socialisation. The
family becomes the primary socialisation space of a child as it supports the entire
children’s moulding. The school is a secondary socialisation space and it provides an
environment for a child to interact strongly with other social environments in society. The
school acts as secondary agent of socialisation to support continuity of thoughts, morals,
values and other cultural things, and the most traditional agent of socialisation as it
is responsible for socializing groups of children and young people on specific skills and
values in society. The school as an agent of socialisation has the task of teaching and
reinforcing. Agency of socialisation includes all people, groups and institutions that
influence self-concepts, emotions, attitudes and behaviour. The influence of the school in
the process of socialisation cannot be questioned and serve to prepare children/learners
for life in society and develop them for the purpose of reproducing the specific values and
norms according to societal needs and comply with societal demands from trained workers
and well-educated citizens. The school seeks to give a heterogenous society commonness
and it connects the structural parts of society. It also provides role differentiation and
solidarity, and can replace parental status as the principal selection mechanism. The
school as organisation represents a structure or an association composed by two or
more people to achieve a common goal. As bureaucratic organisation, it seeks to
incorporate new members and conduct educational and instructional activities in an

, organised and systematic way. The school also serves as a social and educational
organisation, tasked to meet the educational needs and provide students with knowledge,
ability and attitude as relates to
principles of the educational system. The size of the school correlates with the type of
organisational structure.
An open system model of educational organisation includes the following: structure, goals,
functions, bureaucratic aspects, professionals, growth and control of schools was
proposed – it focuses on formal aspects of the internal functioning of the school and can
be called a small model of society.
2. Body of the essay: Unpack the various functionalities of the school. (10)
In modern society, schools have a distinctive role to fulfil, namely to provide access to
concepts which enable young people to move beyond their experience in ways that
would not be open to them in their families and communities. Without schools, each
generation would have to begin from scratch. The functions of the school have evolved
throughout the centuries to accommodate different societal changes. Different institutions
within society, including the educational system have an important function in relation to
the system as a whole and to its other parts. The school is the agent that has the primary
function of socialisation, transmission of culture, social control, social placement and
cultural innovations. The schools have taken over the family functions, relating to the
socialisation of the child/learner. The schools serve to support the discovery of new
knowledge which helps to influence the rate of change in the society. The schools serve to
allocate individuals to positions in the society. Most societies have made use of ascribed or
inherited characteristic in allocating individuals into positions. The school serve as one of
the important measures of ability and energy.
The school also function as an integral part of the process of status allocation in the
following manner:

- provide a context for individuals to demonstrate abilities
- channel individuals to paths that lead to different occupations
- provide skills needed to fulfil the requirements of various positions
- transfer to the individual the different prestige of the school itself.
A child/learner may outgrow the status ascribed to him at birth and achieve a new status
in the socialization process at school. Child socialisation cannot be only limited to
informal experiences which are mostly through primary socialisation in the family - formal
education is needed to supplement the socialization process. Thus the school serves as
the social agent which seeks to bring about conformity, solidarity and continuity of the
particular group or society.
The functions of the school in a modern society cannot only be limited primary functions.
