NR 505 Week 5 TD - Data Collection
Data collection is at the center of research because the facts gathered will
contribute new information as well as answer the research question. For this
discussion, please respond to each of the following topics.
Refine your PICOT question.
Explain your specific research approach (qualitative or quantitative or
mixed methods) and how it has the potential to answer your research
question.
Discuss you data collection method, addressing strengths and
identifying one potential weakness.
Identify the actions you are proposing that will help ensure that quality
data may be produced by your EBP project.
Dr. Pat and Classmates:
, Researchers are frequently charged with the task of undertaking research that is both
credible and has wider reaching applicability to the larger population. The time and expense
involved in research can make it challenging for researchers to study entire populations and, as a
result, sampling techniques are used to assist in the selection of a representative sample
(Kandola, Banner, O’Keefe-McCarthy, & Jassal, 2014). The process of selecting a sample can
be complex and the researcher must have sound knowledge of the population characteristics and
sampling methods in order to ensure that a valid and robust sample is selected. If the researcher
fails to achieve this, the research may not capture a correct target population and, as a result, the
study may have limited applicability and usefulness at the level of practice (Kandola et al.,
2014).
There are two main sampling approaches: probability and non-probability sampling.
However, probability sampling is the only dependable way of finding representative samples in
quantitative studies (Polit & Beck, 2008). Probability sampling can be defined as the random
selection of elements from the population, where each element of the population has an equal
and independent chance of being included in the sample. The four main types of probability
sampling includes simple random sampling, systematic sampling, stratified
sampling, and cluster sampling. In contrast, non-probability sampling methods are
those in which elements are chosen through non-random methods for inclusion into
a research study, it very rarely represents the target population, but it is convenient
and cost-effective. They include convenience sampling, purposive sampling,
snowball sampling and quota sampling (Kondola et al., 2014).
Use of probability sampling techniques for the Ironridge community would decrease the
likelihood of selection bias and minimize the potential for skewed results. While there are five
main types of probability sampling, the ones that I would select for my research would be simple
