Chemical Equilibrium
Closed System:

A closed system (in chemistry) is one in which mass is conserved inside the system but energy can enter or leave the
system freely

Closed System:

An open system (in chemistry) is one in which both energy and matter can be exchanged between the system and its
surroundings (gas being produced ..)

Reversible reaction:
A reversible reaction is one in which PRODUCTS can be converted back into REACTANTS

(Reactions that do not go to completion and occur in both the forward and reverse direction.)

For a reaction involving two reactants(A & B) and two products(C & D) this can be expressed symbolically as:
aA + bB ⇌ cC + dD

When the forward and reverse reactions take place at the SAME RATE
= dynamic equilibrium
For this to happen you need: a reversible reaction and a closed system.

The result is that the concentrations of reactants and products remain constant

Example of a reversible reaction:

𝐶𝑜𝐶𝑙42− + 6𝐻2 𝑂 ⇌ 𝐶𝑜(𝐻2 𝑂)2+
6 + 4𝐶𝑙

∆𝐻 < 0
Blue Pink

𝐶𝑜𝐶𝑙42− + 6𝐻2 𝑂 ⇌ 𝐶𝑜(𝐻2 𝑂)2+ −
6 + 4𝐶𝑙 + 𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑔𝑦

Faster
Add 𝐻2 𝑂 then = forward reaction is favoured

Add 𝐶𝑙 − then = reverse reaction is favoured
Faster
Exo
Add Heat Endo
= reverse reaction is favoured because the reverse reaction is endothermic

Remove heat = forward reaction is favoured because the forward reaction is exothermic

Le Chatelier’s Principle

When an external stress (change in pressure, temperature or concentration) is applied to a system in chemical
equilibrium, the equilibrium point will change in such a way to counteract the stress
