, NURSING AND DISASTER MANAGEMENT 2

The Role of Nursing in Disaster Management

Types of Disasters

A disaster is any occurrence that interrupts the strength of the population causing

death, injuries, or destruction of properties, and impairing the normal life of the people.

Disasters can be natural or human-made. According to Veenema (2013), natural

disasters are those caused by either natural or environmental forces, such as

earthquakes, floods, and tsunamis (2013). Human-made disasters are those that have

been caused by human actions such as acts of war and biological along with the

biochemical terrorism among others. Both natural and human-made disasters can be

equally critical, highlighting the need to adopt disaster management systems to plan

ahead and minimize fatalities and damage.

How Disasters Affect Community Health

The occurrence of disasters affects society in several ways, and one of the core

areas is community health. The Hawaii volcanic eruption in 2018 released toxic gases

that are very harmful to inhabitants (Kerr, 2018). Similarly, Hurricane Harvey of 2017

significantly affected community health. Even 10 months after its occurrence, 16 percent

of the Texas Gulf Coast victims developed health problems, and some of those who

were already sick reported worsening conditions (Constible, 2018). Flooding can

destroy health facilities leading to impaired or inadequate community healthcare.

Disaster management systems are implemented to prevent such occurrences.

Stages of Disaster Management

Management of disasters is directed at reducing human suffering and economic

losses. Mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery are the four stages of disaster
