The Status of Women & Economy

The 21st century has witnessed the rise in recognition of women & their roles in the

society. Women have been granted the freedom more than they had for the past centuries.

Irrespective, they still suffer many inequalities & are less advantaged than men in almost all

spheres of life. Moreover, this trend is very clear in developing nations. They are denied an equal

access to economic freedom, education, health care, & the rights of decision making in sectors

like politics, social situations, & commerce. In these countries, three quarters of all economic

activities are done by men, but women only do 54 percent of the work. However, the 1995

United Nations Human Development Report also clarifies that "an approximate $16 trillion in

worldwide output is currently 'invisible,' of which $11 trillion is estimated to be produced by

women"[ CITATION Ale \l 1033 ]

Today, countries have awaken to the realization that education is part & parcel of women

development, & development to the society at large. It is the main component of human security

when women are empowered.The report by the UNDP Human Development Report, summarizes

that the population of Africa comprise 52 per cent of women. Women contribute more to

economy in Africa than men. According to the report 75 percent of the agricultural produce is

done by women, & they also contribute 60-82 percent of the food. However, only 10 percent of

the incomes is credited to them. Furthermore, they possess a mere 1 per cent of the total assets of

Africa.

These figures indicate the tremendous impediments women in developing nations

encounter on their way to gender equality. There has been great initiatives by governments,
