Outdoor Recreation
Outdoor recreation can be defined as voluntary participation in free time activity that occurs
in the outdoors and embraces the interaction of people with the natural environment. A
diverse array of benefits is realized from outdoor recreation. Individuals may derive personal
meaning from these experiences. Relationships among friends and family may be
strengthened and enriched. Society and community may benefit as activities contribute
towards the process of socialization.
Jensen (1995) proposes five reasons for performing outdoor recreation activity which are:
1) Appreciation of nature- outdoor recreation should build knowledge and enhance
understanding of ecological processes as well as develop an awareness of sensitivity of
natural environments to human impacts.
2) Personal satisfaction and enjoyment- outdoor recreation provides a vehicle by which
people may positively experience nature, derive personal pleasure and/ or intuitive
enrichment.
3) Fitness- outdoor recreation frequently provides opportunities for active physical
engagement.
1
,4) Positive behavior patterns- outdoor recreation should instill an attitude of respect,
consideration, and sincerity toward fellow participants.
5) Stewardship- outdoor recreation provides opportunity for the exercise of moral and
ethical values towards the environment.
Aims and objectives
Aims and objectives are end results which the team seeks to achieve through its existence and
operations. Aims and objectives must be realistic and achievable so that we are motivated and
we strive to attain it. It gives a description of what, how, when and where the outdoor
recreation activity should be. The aims and objectives should fit to what we want to achieve
in ouroutdoor recreationactivity and also how we shall achieve this. So as a team, we have set
ourselves according to our aims and objectives to execute our tasks.
The aim of our outdoor recreation activity is to bring self-esteem improvement and have
social engagement
Our main objectives are:
1. To help improve our self-confidence.
2. To provide an enjoyable and challenging experience.
3. To learn the necessary skills required for the particular activity.
4. To develop an appreciation for the environment
Our aims and objectives have been based on the SMART criteria. SMART Criteria are those
which are:
Specific: Our aim and objectives must apply and be clearly identified to the chosen activity.
They must be clear so that the point can be understood easily and then must be no doubt of
the perfection of the aims and objectives.
Measurable: They can be assessed for effectiveness. We must not exaggerate and must stay
within a limit while explaining our aim and objectives.
2
,Achievable: The outdoor recreation activity can be staged within the deadlines set. We must
plan our work perfectly so that we get the expected work done. We must do the work within
our capability so that we can achieve a positive response.
Realistic: Everything must be organized within financial boundaries to meet the objectives.
The tasks must be completed within our financial budget so that they do not fail our
expectations when we arrive at the final result.
Time Framed: Deadlines are set for completion of the event and all the necessary steps
leading up to it. Our work has been planned in such a way that at the end of our time limit,
we obtain a perfect successful completed work so that we do not have to rush to complete our
remaining tasks. Everything must go on smoothly according to the plan made within the time
frame.
Getting organized
The initial stage of getting the outdoor recreation activity started depends on what kind of
activity to perform to meet our objectives. The event can be personal, leisure, cultural or
environmental. An outdoor activity may be organized by students or by professional people.
Some are organized by a single dedicated individual with comparatively little support and
encouragement, others are organized by large group of enthusiastic people. Getting started
partly depends on what we know about the activitiesthat can be carried out.
Through research and guidance we have obtained information about how to proceed with
organizing the outdoor recreation activity.
There have been many important factors which we have paid attention while organizing the
event. These are as follows:
How much times will organizing the event need from each person- can they spare this
time to do the job properly?
Have anyone in the group has any background of doing it before-have anyone of us done
anything similar, do anyone of us or a participant has any experience in the activity we
might need for example: a volunteer knowing how to use the tools and equipment without
hurting himself?
3
, Do we all have good working relationships with each other - will we all pull our weight
and get on well with each other?
Organizing our event
We have started by organizing our event by selecting a group of members who will be
working in this event. To be able to organize it properly we have conducted a feasibility
study of various places of outdoor know which the most appropriate one is.
Feasibility study: Finding and testing an idea
The feasibility of an outdoor activity might not have been considered because it seemed ‘such
a good idea’. But without doubt, most planning would benefit from a brainstorming phase
when various ideas are thrown in and tossed around to ‘see which the best is’. In practice,
there is a need for a systematic approach, as much of events management. Being systematic
helps us in situations where we have limited expertise, and when the time period in which
proceedings have to be scheduled may be quite short, and have to rely on volunteer or
community support to achieve our aims. In regard to feasibility, major activities might well
get into intensive methods of assessment, such as cost-benefit analysis or investment
appraisal.
There are three screens or filters that we can put suggestions through. These are the
marketing screen, the operations screen and the financial screen. All are intended to sort out
less viable ideas and help identify the ideas that will work best when tested against the
objectives or criteria set. It is important to recognize, however, because of the varied nature
of special events there might not be perfect fit. The end of screening process may still result
in several acceptable ideas- or in none. The organizers will finally have to make a choice
about what to do.
In addition to these processes, once the outdoor activity has been agreed on the first of many
planning undertakings must begin. This first activity is about the lead time for the event or
whether there is enough time to get it booked and organized. Many plannings go badly
because of lack of time to organize them properly and many project management texts argue
that a poor level of planning during the early stages due to a shortage of time creates
problems that will surface later.
