E-Learning Curriculum Technology Proposal

Western Governors University

College of Health Professions

,E-LEARNING CURRICULUM TECHNOLOGY PROPOSAL 2

Executive Summary

As technology in the medical field advances, so must the integration of innovative

technology in undergraduate nursing education curriculum. The benefit of technology in the

medical field, and specifically in the future of nursing education, is multifaceted. Introducing

forms of e-learning technology into the nursing education curriculum could change the

effectiveness of course content, and how it is delivered to students. This proposed introduction

of e-learning has numerous advantages, for example: user friendly access, flexibility of

scheduling, an abundance of available resources, increased learner success rates, autonomy

expansion, development of critical thinking, and improved learner outcomes. E-learning

technology in nursing education has power to transform the future of nursing by providing a

more proficient way to teach and personalizing learning experiences for nursing students.

Research shows undergraduate nursing students and institutions are finding great value in

e-learning opportunities. A curricular appraisal was performed to determine the distinctions in

the existing practice and current evidence-based best practices. An analysis was done of

stakeholders and evaluation of existing and past learning activities. Findings suggest that the

inclusion of an innovative technology change, namely, the Lippincott Solution platform, to the

curriculum will be beneficial to student achievement and institution success rates.

Stakeholder alignment with implementing Lippincott Solution technology platform was

made with future students’ interest as a primary focus. E-learning technology modalities can

provide the learner with the best possible support through streamlined, standardized and

evidence-based best practices. This format is designed to cultivate student success by

developing a high-level of thinking and sharpen clinical skills. Competency and proficiency in

these skills will translate theory into functional clinical practice.

Summary of Sources

As technology in the medical field increases, so must the integration of technology in

nursing education and curriculum. The benefit of technology in the future of nursing education

is multifaceted. Incorporating technology into nursing education programs offers a more

application-based learning and the integration of visual imagery, exceeding conventional

teaching. Technology advancements in nursing education also provides valuable solutions to

faculty shortages, limited laboratory spaces, and scarcity of clinical placements with alternate

clinical experiences. (Foronda, Alfes, Dev, Kleinheksel, Nelson, OʼDonnell, & Samosky, 2017).

According to Raoufi, Manoochehri, Zarifsanaiey, & Nikravanmofrad (2020), technology

has transformed traditional approaches to teaching/learning and nursing education is no

exception to the rule of the positive effects of e-learning. There are countless benefits of using

technology methods, some of which include: easy access to updated material, widespread

distribution of information, a personalized learning experience, scheduling flexibility, and overall

cost effectiveness. The authors determined e-learning model principles used were

understandable and simple to use in nursing education.

Voutilainen, Saaranen, & Sormunen (2017) used a systematic review and meta-analysis to

assess the effectiveness of e-learning on learning outcomes in nursing education, including the

access of quality studies where conventional and e-learning methods were compared. The

authors determined that on average with the e-learning methods, students performed five points

higher in comparison to conventional teaching methods, on a 0-100 grading system.

Incorporating e-learning models can elevate the learners’ understanding, overall achievement,

and thus increasing the effectiveness of the nursing education program.

Increasing the nursing education technology will facilitate educators’ efforts by providing

access to lesson plans, ability to update course material, and instant communication with

students. Essentially, in this e-learning environment, teaching and learning can happen

anywhere, at any time. Studies reflect nursing students highly valued and perceived substantial

knowledge toward e-learning. (Elbasuony, Gangadharan, Janula, Shylaja, & Gaber, 2018).

Simulation based learning (SBL) models are becoming more and more popular in higher

educations. It is important to analyze how well students might perceive and adjust to new

changes in curriculum. On a whole, Lemay, Morin, Bazelais, & Doleck (2018), found students

appreciate the opportunities for teamwork, observation and practicing critical thinking skills.

Students perceived SBLs to be useful. SBLs provide realistic scenario learning for students by

performing and observing. SBL models can be useful to increase learner understanding of

complex concepts and practice clinical skills in a safe environment. E-learning and SBLs can

reinforce the learners’ critical thinking and allow them opportunities to practice skills needed in

future nursing practice.

Knowledge Gaps

Incorporating e-learning technology into the nursing curriculum will provide many

benefits to educators and learners, however, in the process of evolving the new curriculum

changes, both educators and learners may experience knowledge gaps. Educators and students

will be required to learn, adjust and adapt to the information gaps, knowledge gaps, skill gaps

and practice gaps that accompany new technological advances. Increasing and tailoring e-

learning into the nursing curriculum will be a time-consuming process that will require
