NR 500 Week 7 Discussion: Incivility and
Healthful Environments (With Responses)

Week 7 Incivility and Healthful Environments

Incivility in the workplace describes a rude or unsociable behavior in the workplace. In nursing
practice, workplace incivility can be in many forms including; lateral violence, nurse-to-nurse
violence, and workplace bullying (Roberts, 2014). Incivility has far-reaching impacts on the
health of the workplace environment and collaboration in the delivery of health care. It makes
the work environment toxic and sometimes intolerable (Roberts, 2014). It can affect the
psychological well-being of caregivers involved and eventually the quality of care given to the
patient population. Another impact of incivility in the workplace is the development of burnout
(Roberts, 2014). This occurs because of working in a toxic and demanding environment.

In my practice, I have witnessed several instances of incivility in the workplace. One particular
instance I witnessed involved a nurse ward manager and a nurse. The instance involved an
altercation during a nursing shift handover. What I got from the situation is that it had been a
long-standing issue of dislike and disrespect from the nurse manager to the shift nurse that
culminated with the altercation. The nurse manager was poking unnecessary holes in the nurse’s
management of patients. She was not giving her time to present the nursing interventions given
to patients. The nurse manager was not doing the same to other nurses who were in shift with the
victim of incivility. This led to the shift nurse reaching a breaking point and telling off the nurse
manager. Luckily, this altercation did turn physical. The altercation happened in the presence of
day shift nurses, CNAs, and patients.

As an individual, this scenario made me feel bad and sorry for the shift nurse. It was open to me
that the nurse manager was unnecessarily on her case. She was pointing out things that were not
helpful to patient management. In my mind, it was clear that a nurse manager should not handle
a floor nurse like that. It killed my morale and motivation for that day. As a neutral, I stood
between the two to prevent physical engagement. I calmed both down and stopped the hand-over
with some minutes for both to cool off. Another colleague suggested that a fellow nurse, who
was working with the enraged nurse, to finish the hand-over. The consequences of this instance
had far-reaching impacts because it was witnessed by both patients and nurses. The nurse and
nurse manager became sworn enemies and it ended with the nurse being transferred to another
department. It also made the patient feel that the care they were given by the nurse was not
satisfactory. Lastly, the work environment because strict and toxic because each nurse thought
they might be the next victims of incivility from the nurse manager. For instance, the interactive
and jovial work environment became cold with a host of complaints. The nurse detached
themselves from the nurse manager and demanded that she apologize publicly to the colleague.

The situation could have been prevented. The source of the incivility was the nurse manager. She
should have found a way to amend her dislike for this nurse and improve positivity in the work
