How do we assess gait?
- observe as the person walks 10 to 20 feet, turns and returns to the starting point. Look for arm
swing, smooth and rhythmic movement, step length, coordination

- Person cannot walk in straight line or heel to toe, they are swaying a lot when walking or standing
What is tandem walking?
- Person walks in straight line heel to toe. Look for deviations in this pattern or if they sway.
How do we do the Romberg test?
- The person stands up with feet together and arms at sides with eyes closed. They must hold position
for 20 seconds without moving or swaying
Negative Romberg test
- No swaying or movement for 20 sec with eyes closed and feet together

- Loss of balance, swaying, extra movement

- hold the persons thumbs to suspend forearms in relaxation and strike forearm directly. Response is
flexion and supination of forearm
Patellar reflex (knee jerk)
- reflex tests L2-L4
How do we test patellar reflex
- let the legs dang freely to flex the knee, strike the tendon below knee cap. Response is extension of
the lower leg
Achilles reflex
- reflex tests L7-S2
How do we test achilles reflex
- position the person with knee flexed, hold foot in dorsiflexion and strike tendon directly. Response is
the foot plantar flexes against hand
Babinski reflex
- in response to the sole of the foot being stroked, the toes will flare if positive and curl if negative
