There has been an increase in falls on a specific unit. After gathering information on the falls, it
was found that the falls were occurring primarily during the times of shift change. It would be beneficial to change the shift times to stagger staff coming to work to improve the number of falls. Kotter's Change Model will be used to make the transition easier for staff. Step 1: Create urgency-Creating a 'sense of importance' to improve current practices can be the essential reason for a change(Aziz,2017). Presenting data that shows the increase of falls will show staff why a change has to occur. Step 2: Form a powerful coalition- When making a change, it is essential to have individuals on your team who agree and will advocate for the change. Determine their relationship with the other staff members and how the staff responds to them. Step 3: Create a vision for change - Making a change can be challenging, but creating a vision of the positive effect of the change will help the transition be smoother. A staff meeting is a great
place to start when presenting this vision. Step 4: Communicating the vision- It is important to allow the staff to express their concerns regarding the change. When changing an individual's work schedule can cause many obstacles in
their personal life, they need to voice their concerns and know that their circumstances will be considered. Step 5: Empower action- Once the staff is aware of the circumstances for a change and the plan to alleviate the challenges, all the staff to make suggestions. Discuss why the staff is suggesting a different idea and brainstorm together to form a solid plan. Step 6: Create quick wins- Once the plan is in place, it helps sway the staff that is still leery of the change. Present data that shows how the number of falls remains steady or decrease. This will help establish the need for the change. Step 7: Build on the change and don't let up- Any process has room for improvement. Ask the staff the pros and cons they see in the plan and ask for ideas on how to improve. Step 8: Make change stick - This last step is to make the new schedules permanent. This involves approval from upper management. When presenting the new schedule, present the data before and after to show how falls have decreased and why. For the staff affected by the change, congratulate them for their hard work and let them know that it only was successful with their help.
Servant leadership can be beneficial when making changes to improve the workflow. As a servant leader, work side by side with all your staff and see the change's effects in the actual workflow. Many ideas sound and look great on paper, but they may not be as effective when they are implemented. Staff will value you as their leader because you are presenting on the actual floor instead of demanding from the office. Reference:
