Staff shouldn’t let anybody in unless they know for sure they’re who they say they are.

The lifts, stairs, WCs and all the area around them are used by the public. The remaining area is a
single open space which could make it easy for people to sneak in and steal something. To prevent
this, the receptionist could ask who they are and check with another member of staff to see if they
know them.

Treat staff members with respect.

If a staff member becomes frustrated with how they are treated by their colleagues, they might
want to get revenge. They can do this by doing damage to the equipment at BCTAA. To avoid this,
staff could be offered an opportunity to vent their concerns to another member of staff to see if
anything can be done.

Teach staff about secure passwords to ensure their accounts are safe.

Being in an open office increases the risk of strangers trying to access the computers without
permission. If the password for the computers aren’t strong, they would be able to access them
easily. To avoid this, BCTAA would tach their staff what makes a strong password so they can keep
their accounts safe and the organisations.

Alternatives

The scenario doesn’t say they have cameras installed. An alternative to protect BCTAA’s equipment
is to have cameras in the building. This will keep a record of who has entered the building and they
will be able to give evidence to the police if something was stolen.

An alternative to avoiding a situation with staff members is to give them time off. When the staff
member is stressed, they don’t have much motivation to do work. This will let them relax for a few
days so they can forget any frustrations they have with the organisation.

Another way to teach staff about strong passwords is to have validation rules in place when they’re
entering a new password. As they create a new password, rules could display for the user to read. If
their password doesn’t meet the criteria for a strong password, they’ll have to put in a new one.

Rationale

Installing cameras would increase the security of the building but it would come at a great expense
for BCTAA. Cameras can be expensive especially if they’re high quality ones. BCTA would also need
to create storage space to keep all the recording from the camera. This would use a lot of space
because the camera would save video files to the system which are long.

Letting staff at BCTAA have time off work would let them have a break for a while, however this
would reduce the amount of staff they’d have in their building. Another problem with letting staff
have time off is they could abuse it. Some staff could pretend to be very stressed in order to get time
off.

Validation rules would make sure that they staff are inputting strong passwords for their accounts. A
problem with this though is some staff might put lots of random characters, that they won’t
