In the History and Philosophy of Psychology, Ayurveda is categorized as traditional
medicine, yet it has not attained that historical status in the West. Holistic medicine and treatment
options have become less of an abstract concept in the mainstream. Greater acceptance of
modalities from different countries and different healing traditions have garnered more attention
and favor in the medical community (Patwardhan, 2012). The increased globalization of the
world has opened the door and created intersectionality of allopathic medicine and Eastern
medicine practices such as Ayurveda. One factor in the lack of acceptance and delivery of non-
evidence treatment may be the lack of experimental rigor, as evident when doing a literature
review.
Ayurveda is a multifaceted, holistic approach to treating the whole organism, whereas
biomedicine is theory-oriented, analytical, and reductionist (Patwardhan, 2012). Ayurveda is an
ancient healing systems grounded in experiential, intuitive, and interpretive body-mind-spirit
orientations, and each person is viewed as a unique organism. The word Ayurveda comes
from ayu, meaning life, and veda, meaning science (Patwardhan, 2012). Ayurveda treatment
guides food, nutrition, diet, emotions, experiences and considers seasonality in assessment. The
goal of Ayurveda is to restore balance.
From a pharmacological perspective, Ayurveda views pharmacological treatment as
twofold; to enhance a botanical drug potency and reduce toxicity (Patwardhan, 2012). This
