Course materials and technology
• Textbook: Organic Chemistry 6th edition by Janice G. Smith; McGraw-Hill, 2019 and
the Connect Online Learning Platform, also from McGraw-Hill. Connect only access
code for Smith Organic Chemistry 6e – ISBN # 9781260475593. Bundle of an access
code with text – ISBN # 9781260699173. Available in the bookstore.
• Student response system: Each student is required to have their own i>clicker 2
remote. Available in the bookstore.

Although not required, I suggest you consider the book “Organic Chemistry Principles in
Context” by Mark M. Green (available through Amazon.com, paperback $22 approx,
Kindle $8 approx) because it offers a very unique way to look at organic chemistry. My
course will follow some aspects of the organizational sequence of this book. The videos
by the author, Dr. Green, are free and highly educational. I encourage you to watch
them as we move along. The answers to problems in this book are free and can be found
at ‘organicchemistryprinciplesincontext.com.’

YOU MUST DO ASAP:
1) Register your i>clicker 2 with Blackboard. We will have clicker questions the first day
of class. Procedure: Log into Blackboard. Select this course. Select Tools on the left-
hand menu. Find ‘i>clicker student registration.’ Click on it and enter the 8-character
code found on your remote.
2) Enter your Blackboard & Connect Student Registration (see instructions handout
under class announcement)

What is this course about?
CHEM 341 is the first part of a two-semester sequence in organic chemistry, the chemistry
of carbon-containing compounds. Topics in this course will be focused on the principles of
structure, reactivity, and synthesis of organic compounds, mainly hydrocarbons, and the
basic reaction mechanisms for their formation or transformation. In addition, two
spectroscopic tools (IR and NMR spectroscopy) that serve to identify organic molecules will
be covered. While learning the fundamental aspects of organic chemistry, I hope it will
become apparent to you that this science is central to the practice and understanding of
many other disciplines. Lectures and problems may feature organic compounds and
reactions in the context of biology, pharmacy, medicine, materials, energy or fuel science.
