University Of The People
HIST 1421: GREEK AND ROMAN CIVILIZATION
UNIT 4 ASSIGNMENT

INTRODUCTION
I would be writing about the political and the economical differences in between the
plebeians and the patricians that resulted in a revolt, I would also be including the
results of the first secession.

The plebeians and the patricians were the two separate groups of the Roman
people. The patricians were members of the upper class and then anyone not in the
upper class was refereed to as a plebeian (“Ancient Rome: Plebeians and Patricians,”
n.d.).
Preparations for the Plebeian Revolt, The Plebeians were common people in ancient
Rome. Plebeians were not allowed in the Senate at first, nor were they allowed to
hold any public office outside of the military, and no Plebeian was allowed to marry
a patrician until 445 B.C. Overall, plebeians were poorer than patricians, but this
does not mean that all plebeians were poor; in practice, many affluent plebeians
existed. The plebeians were practically all of Rome's non-patriarchal people.
Plebeians were mostly marginal farmers or artisans.

BODY
Patricians were a prosperous and affluent social class. Patrician family can track
their ancestors back to the area's founding tribes, adding to their sense of
entitlement after the Estrucan King was deposed. Being a patrician was primarily
determined by blood, and ancient Rome formed gentes, or clans, made up of the
city's most influential families.
Plebeians and patricians collaborated to depose the Estrucan King, with a shared
purpose in mind. Regrettably, the plebeians did not reap the benefits they had
wanted.
The patricians seized power and founded a "republic," but in fact, the government
they established after deposing the Estrucan king was more akin to a dictator,
perhaps an oppressive oligarchy. The patricians were an entitled class in ancient
Rome who believed that their class was best qualified to govern. The plebeians now
had a large number of people ruling over them under the patricians' constitution.
It's likely that the plebeians fared poorer under the patricians than they did under
the kings. The plebeians struggled from an excess of hunger, periodic starvation, and
a lack of political influence to even try to pull themselves out of this pitiful situation
under patrician control.
The Roman Republic, which had just been formed, was constantly at war. Their
military victories brought an explosion of prosperity to Rome in the early republic,
as shown by the temples constructed at the time. The military was another prime
example of the significant divide between patricians and plebeians. The hoplite
force of the Roman military was made up of plebeians, while the Calvary was made
up of patricians. Plebeians formed their own government to rule themselves and
