Assignment 2: Cultural Activity Report
Strayer University
HUM 111- World Cultures I
Paragraph 1
(Introduction) The purpose of this essay is to describe the plot, two scenes, and my overall
thoughts about the play Amadeus. I will first describe the plot of the play. Most of the story
takes place from years 1781 to 1792. The play starts out in 1823 Vienna with an old man
confessing to a murder. He says he is going to tell the whole story and the scene goes back in
time. It is now 1781 before the old man and his victim meet. “Amadeus takes us on a wild ride
through the trials and tribulations of genius, jealousy and revenge.” (Ceesay)
Paragraph 2
(Three Characters in the Play)
The 1st character is Antonio Salieri. He is one of the main characters. He is the old man at the
beginning of the play that is telling the story. (Ceesay)
The 2nd character is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart is the other main character. He is a
young composer who is not as great a man as he is composer. (Ceesay)
The 3rd character is Constanze Weber. She is Mozart’s wife. “She is madly in love with
him.” (Ceesay)
Paragraph 3
(Describe the first scene)
The curtains open to three people: Antonio Salieri and what looks like two servants. They push
Salieri forward in a wheelchair, and then they go to stand off on either side of him. Two more
people walk out on stage talking to each other. The men are wearing hats and long petticoats.
They ask the servants “Tell us at once, what does he cry? What does he cry? What does he cry?”
Salieri then yells, “Mozart!” The men act surprised, but the servants do not. The men start talking
to each other and try to figure out why he would be talking about Mozart. These men do not
believe that Salieri murdered Mozart at first, until Salieri yells out something in a different
language. They then look at each other and say, “I don’t believe it… Did he do it after all?” The
two men walk off stage and leave the two servants with Salieri. (Amadeus Part 1)
Step 4
Paragraph 4
(Describe second scene)
The curtains open to a man talking to himself and pacing back and forth. I believe this man is a
young Salieri. There is a desk, two chairs, and a lamp in this scene. He seems to be extremely
