Lenin 7 Measures were introduced to limit religion:
- 1918 - Church deprived of land, publications and religious education outside the home banned
- Churches destroyed or converted for other purposes
- Rituals attacked e.g. baptisms replaced by ‘Octoberings’
- 1918 - head of church under house arrest
- During civil war famine, supplies taken from church to help pay for food
- 28 priests murdered
- Priests denied the vote and were targets of the Red Terror
- Large restriction towards Orthodox Church – 1918 Decree on Freedom of Conscience separated religion
and state
- Churches converted to other purposes – 4/5 of village churches no longer used during 1920s
