Week 2 Assignment : Making Tough Decisions
The Basics of Vaccines 2012 states that "a vaccine stimulates your immune system to
produce antibodies, exactly like it would if you were exposed to the disease. After getting
vaccinated, you develop immunity to that disease, without having to get the disease first."
This is why vaccines are now recommended and even enforced in some institutions. Where
there are some drugs that can cure a disease, vaccines prevent them from affecting the body.
Vaccines help lessen the death and morbidity that comes with some of the possible life-
threatening complications like polio, measles, and hepatitis B. A great example of a vaccine
that has helped millions is the Smallpox vaccine. Dr. Edward Jenner eliminated the disease.
He realized that an injection with cowpox, a weaker version of the virus, could stop smallpox.
People put off getting their immunizations for many reasons; but the two popular
reasons skepticism of the immunization program and personal experience. In the case of the
people who have no confidence in the vaccines, they have grown to trust what others have
told them and not facts. It could also be because of their previous experiences with
immunizations. "The Cutter Incident of 1955 resulted in more than 250 deaths following the
polio vaccine administration containing live poliovirus even after passing the safety checks.
Such stories make some parents fear vaccines (Miller et al., 2015)". Another reason why
people may delay getting their immunization is a lack of knowledge. Most people indeed
know about vaccines and their availability to the public, both for adults and children, but the
material is often infrequent and full of errors, especially when it comes to scheduling. Not
keeping up with appropriate times that the vaccines should be given will also delay getting
their shots up to date.
