Advanced Practice Nursing Development Plan
At the top of every professional’s goal list is the ambition to work at one’s greatest
potential. In order to reach this, one must first be knowledgeable in the requirements of the
profession. Advanced practice nursing has several key requirements in order to acquire and
maintain advanced status. This paper will discuss the scope of Practice for NPs as it pertains to
Florida, review the nine core competencies written within the National Organization of Nurse
Practitioner Faculties (NONPF), and evaluate three leadership skills. In addition to defining the
competencies and leadership skills, this paper will also explore which competencies and skills I
excel in and investigate how to improve on the ones that need work.
Nurse Practitioner Scope of Practice in Florida
To understand the scope of practice for NPs wishing to practice in Florida one needs to
know the basics of the Nurse Practice Act (NPA), education and certification necessities, and the
regulatory and legal requirements for the state. While the current legislation available outlines
the NPA in Florida from 2019 (and pre-full authority NP legislation), it is probable that
education, and certification will change very little while regulatory and legal requirement
changes may be abundant. For the purpose of this paper, the available 2020 legislation for NPs
, 2
will be reviewed and compared to by the 2019 NP legislation. In Florida’s NPA, section 464.012
details the requirements for licensure for APNs as delegated by the Florid Board of Nursing.
Education and Certification Requirements
There are several minimum requirements needed for APN licensure in the state of Florida
as outlined in the NPA of Florida, 2019 Florida Statutes, section 464.012. Foremost, a current
Florida (or multi-state) RN license in good standing must be held. In addition to an RN license,
either graduation from an approved master’s program and/or certification in a specialty, such as
certified nurse practitioner from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) through
a written examination should be obtained (Florida Nurse Practice Act, 2019/ Florida’s
Administrative Code, 2019). These requirements comply with the same standards as the APRN
Consensus Model’s LACE (licensure, accreditation, certification and education) initiative
(APRN Consensus Work Group & National Council of State Boards of Nursing APRN Advisory
Committee, 2008)
Regulatory and Legal Requirements in Florida
Although 2020 has been a dramatic year for healthcare, it’s an amazing year for NPs in
Florida. In July, the bill to grant NPs full practice authority was passed to NPs that have over
3000 hours of experience under physician supervision (Thomas, 2020). Former 2019 legislation
kept Florida NPs at a restricted status. It is without doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic was the
final piece of solving this 7-year puzzle as the need for advanced hands to be available and
ready. Because this is such a recent event, the complete list of rules and regulations are still
being discussed by the Florida Board of Nursing and many sources do not yet reflect the updated
ruling. It is estimated that the application for independent practice will become available in
October 2020 and requirements include 3,000 or more hours of physician supervised experience
