Has the role of individuals been the main factor in developing surgery in
medicine? (25 min)

Individuals are the main factor to development of surgery in medicine as they
had discovered new knowladge to improve surgery. After Pasture had
discovered the germ theory (proving spontaneous generation wrong),
surgeons started to improve their methods in response to the new theory. For
example, Lister had popularised the theory by practicing it on human disease
through the anti-septic technique which soon led to the aseptic technique in
1890. This meant that there was an improvement in surgical methods as the
surgeons where more knowledgeable in the cause of disease, thus focused on
techniques and treatments. This resulted in better health care of the public as
mortality rates had increased by 5% after Lister’s approach to surgery.
Therefore, individuals are the main factor to the development of surgery of
medicine as they had discovered new knowladge to improve surgery.

However, this could not have been completed without the factor of war.
Individuals would not have been pushed their findings. Before, cauterisation,
trepanning and bloodletting was commonly used, until Pare improvised with:
egg white, turpentine and rose oil and wrote the ‘general book of wounds’ in
1545 against old surgical beliefs. This meant that barber surgeons during the
medieval and renaissance had become more skilled in surgery due to war,
especially due to the fact that the church had band surgey on human. As a
result, health of the public (mostly middle and lower class) had improved as
barber surgeons had more knowladge of the human anatomy from war.
Therefore, war was the main factor to the development of surgery as it
catalysed the development of surgery.
Arguably, war could not have been effective to the development of surgery if it
was not for the technology. New technologies such as the printing press in
1541 and the microscope in 1601 had enabled discovery much further than
human abilities. Technology such as MRI scanning and the key hole method
was commonly used in the 1900s. This meant that surgeons had improved the
quality of surgery through treatment of the scientific method. As a result,
there was more accurate surgery and faster and safer surgery improving health
of the public. Therefore, development of surgery is the most important factor
to the development of surgery as it improved the quality of surgery.
Overall, technology is the most important as it had brought a scope beyond
human abilities, where individuals where then able to carry on the
