Encounters with
Dracula
,⬩
Dracula
Dracula’s goal is to invade England, and eventually
control it like he does Transylvania.
⬩ He does this first through learning the culture of
England through Harker, a young lawyer who is
rather inexperienced in the field.
⬩ Then, upon arriving in England, he works his way
up through the weakest links.
- First through animals (dogs), then through women
(Lucy and Mina are the only ones we can confirm,
though there is a proposed victim in chapter 13, “a
very beautiful girl, in a big cartwheel hat”), and his
end goal is the men (who hold the most power in
society. .
⬩ Encounters with Dracula (and vampires in general)
tend to have a sexual element to them. 2
,The supernatural in the encounters is
used to present fears of the time, like:
⬩ The spread of sexual diseases (EG: syphilis).
⬩ The new woman, and of women gaining autonomy.
⬩ Sexual promiscuity.
⬩ The destruction of the patriarchy.
⬩ The invasion of the foreign other.
⬩ Moral decay/degeneration.
⬩ The fight between civilised behaviour and wanton depravity.
