Ethical Leadership C206 Task 3
A. Analyze Company’s Code of Ethics
For the purposes of this paper, I have chosen to use Target Corporations Code of
Ethics. As I reviewed each one of the options, I felt that Target had the easiest to read and
understand Code of Ethics. The other companies wrote a lot of fluff but didn’t clarify what it
meant and what their expectations were of their employees.
A1. CSR and Code of Ethics
Targets has well written and very comprehensive code of ethics. It touches all four
areas of corporate responsibility: legal, ethical, philanthropic, and economic. The code of
ethics discusses legal responsibility as it refers to laws and regulations. It discusses how all
employees of Target need to adhere to these laws. Ethical responsibility is discussed in the
COE by referring to respecting each individual even if they are from a different background.
In general, they talk about be good to each other and making ethical decisions. There is an
entire section on philanthropic, where they discuss the charities they give back to and
donations that are made. If you go into a Target store, they have signs that show how much
they have donated into the community and who the receiving organization is. Lastly the code
of ethics makes references to economic. This is discussed in the sense that each employee
should make a fair wage and compensated for there work hours.
A2. Legal Mandates and Code of Ethics
Based on my review of their code of ethics, I believe that Target takes legal mandates
very seriously. There code of ethics addresses how to prevent bribery which they teach their
team members to recognize what a bribe is and how to deal with it. The code of ethics also
discusses how they will provide accurate financial statements to
, SEC and follow all their rules and regulations. In addition, they discuss international trade
law, insider trading, and employment laws. The also provide links to get further information
if you need it.
A2A. Implications of Non-compliance
If an organization is non-compliant with legal mandates, they can have many legal
ramifications. The organization can be sued by employees or be fined by government. If an
individual is non-compliant, they can be fired, fined, or appropriate legal action based on
what the situation was. In each breakroom of every Target store there are posters reminding
employees about legal mandates. These posters are required by OSHA. If Target does not
post them then they will be non-compliant. It is imperative that both the company and the
employee be compliant, or they will face consequences.
A2B. Legal or Ethical Safeguards
Targets code of ethics outlines some safeguards. The code of ethics discusses the
importance of training for all employees in regard to the job they are hired for. It also discusses
that the training be done regularly as needed for each job. The code of ethics also discusses
protecting what is ours. In this section, they discuss the need to protect physical asses including
merchandise, tools, equipment, and cash. Employees are required to follow security protocols to
protect the assets while maintain a safe place for guests and employees. The employees are
encouraged to report any unethical behavior regarding theft. The code of ethics also says that if
a complaint is filed in good faith, no retaliation will occur against the employee.
A3. Development of an Ethical Culture
Developing an ethical culture is important in any organization and Target is no different.
They have done an exceptional job of developing that culture by creating a code of ethics. The
way the code of ethics is written, it helps to facilitate a culture that includes everyone and to
ensure that everyone is valued and respected. The overall document discusses that leadership
