Introduction
My mission is to give the homeless of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a safe place to stay by
working with local nonprofit organizations to stop the increase in numbers.
General Overview and Rationale
Homelessness transpires daily on an international level. This has been a long and
increasing issue within Rio de Janeiro, brazil. Rio reported a 150% increase from 2014-2017.
One of the leading causes of homelessness in Brazil is the industrialization and involvement in
globalization raised land prices (The Borgen Project). Due to the country's rising urbanization
contributions to significant city house shortages, many of those in need of housing are from low-
income families. Recent wage cuts and jobless rates surpassing 12% have ensured that 1.2
million Rio residents remain in "favelas." Favelas are a Brazilian shack or shanty town; a slum
(Oxford Languages). Though the city government launched programs to move the homeless into
shelters and accessible housing, the city still faces rapid growth rates. Brazil's Homeless Workers
Movement (MTST), located in São Paulo, Brazil, has led multiple protests about the increase in
real estate and rental prices and the rate cuts on minimum wage. My goal is to team up with local
nonprofit organizations like MTST, and Minha Casa, Minha Vida, in providing a better living for
the homeless.

plain between Guanabara Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Rio's abnormally breathtaking scenery is
punctuated by a group of forested mountains that overlook the city. Rising to the highest peak of
the Tijuca massif at 1,021 m high, and cascading down to the coast where the steep cone shapes
of Pão de Açucar (Sugar Loaf), Urca, Cara de Cão, and Corcovado frame the broad sweeps of
Guanabara Bay that shelters Rio de Janeiro from the Atlantic Ocean. Rio de Janeiro's primary
natural resources include oil and petroleum, gas, and mining.
