The Importance of Strategic Leadership
A leader is a person or persons within an organization that can move individuals
towards the overarching goal of an organization (Pisapia, 2009). Organizations around the
world are changing and this calls for a better leader, one that is strategic. This involves
combining intent with action, politics with ethics, and making managers into leaders (Pisapia,
2009). There are several different definitions for strategic leadership and that is due to the
broad scope that covers strategic leadership. Each of these definitions is boiled down to a
single definition with distinct responsibilities. The role of strategic leadership in an
organization deals with managing the resources of a company, creating a strategic process,
and sustaining the organizations’ competitive advantage (UMGC, 2021d).
There is a hard emphasis on adapting to change when it comes to strategic leadership
and how an organization can adapt to the change (UMGC, 2021a). Strategic leaders
understand that change in an organization is inevitable and avoiding it is a useless endeavor.
This allows them to prepare the organization for the sudden, political, global, and
environmental changes as they occur (Pisapia, 2009). This brings stability to the organization
and these leaders guide the organization through these various transformations. These leaders
need to have specific values, traits, and abilities that make them effective strategic leaders.
Values, Traits, and Abilities

Commitment, integrity, and innovation are the values that come to mind when
describing an effective CEO (Vilkinas, Murray & Chua, 2019). These are the values of
many good leaders in many different organizations. These leaders are dedicated to the
organization and are willing to make changes for the good of the company. The integrity of
an individual speaks volumes to followers and the organization. This value shows that a
leader will do what is right for their employees as well as the organization (Vilkinas, 2019).
Innovation is a
crucial addition to any role as it allows for new ideas to solve challenges that may arise in
disasters, internal change, or even more mundane problems. This creates a leader who
can adapt to change and create a sustainable company.
Traits
There are many different traits that can require a leader in any position to meet the
performance goals set by the organization. However, the traits that seem to have the most
effect are initiative, drive, and passion (Mennella & Pilgrim, 2018). These three traits may
seem rather mundane to be on a list for a CEO, however, as simple as they are it is effective.
Leaders who are passionate and driven by their work reflect directly on the value of
commitment. They enjoy their work, they are internally or externally driven whether
through passion, money, or other means. They will get the job done and they will do it to
make the company better. The initiative is comparative to innovation, not in all cases but in
some, as they will find better ways to accomplish their tasks. These leaders will take the first
step without any prodding, they will solve problems and continue to learn and grow
(Vilkinas,
2019).
