ASSIGNMENT 1
Training Needs and Assessment, Part 1

HRMN 406- Employee Training and Development

Introduction

Training is recognized as one of the most important employment tools in the

professional industry. Lack of training or improper training will result in poor employee

performance, poor business practices and can cause an organization to lose their business.

Training helps employees to understand their job responsibilities, identify company goals

and values and how to achieve those goals efficiently. Not only is it important for an

organization to have training, but the training must also be effective. Over training or under

training can lead to serious issues in the organization. For example, overtraining an

employee can take the focus from important skills needed for specific positions and

undertraining can cause employees to lack the skill and knowledge to perform in that role.

Effective training is crucial in some industries such as the medical field and law

enforcement. Lack of training can cause bodily harm or even death if the training

programs of an organization in not effective. This is why it is important to have a training

needs assessment in place to determine what areas need to be strengthen and how to correct

performance issues.

Transurban Introduction

Transurban is an Australian owned company that has branched out into the United

States, operating out of Northern Virginia. The organization operates one of the world’s

largest toll roads in addition to being one of many companies who specialize in technology

and transportation. Transurban leads the industry with high standard performances and

services that will last/improve over the next 10-20 years. Transurban currently has a total

of 3,000 employees with over 250 employees in the United States with many levels of

employees to include project managers, contract managers, operation managers,

, department directors and executive managers. Project Managers oversee projects in their

entirety. It includes monitoring safety and performance, deadlines, project costs and

ensuring that job sites are following specified terms negotiated at the beginning of the

contract.

Contract managers are responsible for budgeting, timing, delivery, deadlines and

completion of road projects. After that they move on to other projects and perform the

same duties. Operations managers is an entirely different department that oversee the

operation as they are being performed. They also monitor and report discrepancies or

defects of finished products and notifies the project manager of faults and repairs.

Department Directors oversee managers under the umbrella of their department. They

escalate crucial problem or concerns to the Executive manager’s level. Directors also make

sure that the company constantly competes to win new contracts and plays a part in

bidding on projects.

The Executives are the face of the company and oversees the entire operation of the

company. They are responsible for making sure the company gets funding from the

government and investors. The Executives are involved in the politics and branding of the

company. They also make sure that the company is making a profit and continuing to operate

making substantial revenue to keep investors and funding. This company has many diverse

workforce attributes that include excellent benefits, flexibility, and culture but

there are a few areas the organization needs to work on that conflicts with company values.

Transurban has struggled to maintain cultural differences in the workplace. When

terminating employees, the best practices aren’t being used nor are the proper protocols are

implemented during this time. Due to the organization being a contract company through the

state of Virginia, the term ‘At-Will’ employment allows them to slide under the radar

retaliation, race, and sexual lifestyle but it is documented that the employee has

performance issues although the employee meets company expectations on their
