CM206 - Unit 6 Assignment
Being a good listener is one of the main skills to finding success in your personal and
professional life. When others feel that they are being heard while they are speaking, they will
become appreciative and recognize that you appreciate what they have to say. Listening is much
more than acknowledging the speaker when they are talking it is about being engaged and
concentrating on what is being said in the conversation. When you practice active listening, you
will find opportunities to gain new knowledge, learn something new, or a deeper understanding
of the speaker and their views. When you are practice actively listening you will find that there
are different listening types, barriers, and verbal and nonverbal cues that you can utilize in your
day-to-day life. If there is one skill that you would like to master in life, you should try
listening.
Listening is a key to all communication and gather of information. Listening is the
process of giving someone your undivided attention to what they are saying and establishing a
channel of communication. Listening requires someone to be present at the moment and trying
to hear the speaker’s message while processing the conveyed message. Without listening it
would
be impossible for anyone to gain a meaningful relationship or connect with others on a deep
level. When an active listener invests time and attention to the speaker a relationship will begin
to form which will allow participation in the communication channels verbally and nonverbally.
Furthermore, when the speaker recognizes that you as the listener are interested in what they
are saying they will be willing to speak openly and freely as a result.
, In interpersonal communication, listening can be defined as informational, critical, or
empathic listening. Firstly, informational listening is when we are looking for new information
or seeking knowledge on a new subject. Informational listening is about learning and absorbing
new information and facts about a subject or person. Informational listening is less active than
many of the other types of listening. When we are listening to learn or be instructed, we are
taking in new information and facts, we are not criticizing or analyzing. (Skills You Need, n.d.a)
Secondly, critical listening is what you do when you are analyzing or evaluating the speaker’s
information and you are gauging their relevance and credibility.
The speaker’s goal is to persuade you or to relay information that their beliefs and
opinions are valid. The listener must evaluate the information being received and compare it to
the knowledge that they know to be true or factual. Finally, the last type of listening is empathic
listening. Empathic listening is when you listen to relate with someone and their current
situation. It is important to note that to be empathetic, you do not necessarily need to agree with
the sender's view of the problem. It is also not necessary that you have had a similar problem in
your own life. Your goal is not to project yourself into the other person's situation; it is to keep
yourself out of it and, at least for the moment, experience the world through your friend's
perspective. (2019, Hamilton, et al.) The type of listening that we do is ever-changing, and you
may use one type of listening in a situation or you may use all three at once.
Listening comes in five main styles that allow us to understand and retain in our minds
what we have heard. The first of these stages is receiving. Receiving is hearing the focus of the
speaker’s message and to avoid confusion we must gather the information as it is given to us.
The second stage is understanding, in this stage, we are trying to learn the meaning of the
message that is being conveyed to us. This stage may be difficult because we are all raised
differently with different backgrounds, ethnicity, and culture. For example, a shopping cart in the
