In the early 1900's, Alfred Adler began addressing critical and contemporary issues such
as equality, parent education, the influence of birth order, lifestyle, and the holism of
individuals(Adler Graduate School, nd). Adler believed that we all have one basic desire and
goal: to belong and to feel significant. The Individual Psychology of Alfred Adler is based upon
a phenomenological, holistic understanding of human behavior (Jon Carlson and Matt Englar-
Carlson, 2017).Adlerian Psychology focuses on people's attempts to compensate for their self-
perceived inferiority to others. These feelings of inferiority originate from one's position in the
family constellation, specifically if there was an early experience of humiliation; a significant
physical condition or defect; or a general lack of social feeling towards others(Jon Carlson and
Matt Englar-Carlson, 2017).Theaim of this paper is to explain, using Individual Psychology
Theory (IPT), the behavior of a 32- year-old Caucasian male in the proposed psychodynamic
theory scenario. In the pages that follow, I will describe the main concepts of Adler’s theory,
explain how the main concepts of this theory may apply to the male individual, and describe the
ways in which IPT explains this individual’s personality and where it falls short.

According to Adler, whenencouraged, a person will feelproficient and esteemedoften
acting in a connected and cooperative manner. On the other hand, when a person feels
discouraged, they often act in unhealthy ways by competing, withdrawing, or giving up(Adler
