Face Reality - Acne Types and Severity
CORRECT 100%
Inflamed Acne - ANSWERInflamed with redness, pimples, pustules and possibly cysts. It is usually hot
or warm to the touch and bleeds quite easily when extractions are performed. Skin with inflamed
acne is usually quite sensitive that you will want to start slowly with products. (easiest type of skin to
clear as it is very responsive to products)

Combination Acne - ANSWERCombination acne is what you will mostly see in acne clients. It is a
combination of both inflamed and not inflamed lesions. You want to treat them with an inflamed
acne protocol first and then when the inflammation goes down, you can start treating them with
non-inflamed acne left over. The inflamed lesions will almost always clear first and you will want to
explain that non-inflamed acne almost alway takes longer to clear. Then you will have to be more
aggressive in getting the non-inflamed lesions under control.

Mild Severity - ANSWER10 lesions or less on each side of their face

Moderate - ANSWER10-30 lesions on each side of their face

Non-imflamed Acne - ANSWERIt looks dull sluggish and has a pebbly appearance with lots of open
and closed comedones. An open come-done also known as a black head, the tip of the plug darkens
as it is exposed to the oxygen in the environment, contrary to popular belief blackheads are not
caused by dirt, it is a plug of dead skin cells and sebum that is discolored, when the end of the plug
gets exposed to air it oxidizes and turns the dark color, hence giving the blackhead apt name. A
closed come-done is also known as a white head, which is basically a blackhead that has not been
matured to a blackhead yet, as the pore remains closed. Because the pore is closed to air it does not
discolor like the blackhead does, it just looks like congestion and bumps under the skin. If there are a
lot of closed comedones it is called maturation arrest acne, this means that the come-done has not
matured into an open come-done yet. (Most of the time non-imflammed acne is not sensitive or
reactive to products.)

Severe - ANSWER30 lesions or more on each side of their face

If the client has combination acne - ANSWERnote the severity of the inflamed and note the severity
of the non-inflamed
