Term 1 Lab 1 ELN McMaster University
Term 1 Lab 1 ELN
In preparation for the lab day, please read the lab in its entirety and fill out the following sections. Thank
you. This ELN is due Wednesday September 25 th no later than 11 am in the appropriate assignment
folder on A2L. Please submit one pdf file of this completed template. Please note: it is your responsibility

Purpose and experimental overview
In the space provided below:
1. Purpose - Briefly describe the purpose of each part of this lab. What is your overall goal for this
lab day (very concise, cannot exceed 100 words)?
The Laboratory Basics – Pipetting, & Preparing Solutions section achieves many objectives. Students
are able to gain practical experience in calculating concentrations and amounts, in pipetting
accurately and precisely, and lastly gain an understanding of solution making. In the second portion
of this lab, students will be able to understand the processes involved in PCR through practical
experience.
2. Experimental overview – Design a concise flowchart to highlight the MAIN steps of your
experimental lab setup (not too much detail please and do NOT copy the procedure from
your courseware). Describe the general flow of experiments that will be conducted to address
the questions from your purpose. Minimal detail required - just text and arrows. A well
designed flowchart will solidify the “whole picture” with respect to your experimental
reasoning. You need to create this electronically using programs like PowerPoint, word, etc.
