In my two-hour practicum, I met with the 60-year-old hypertension patient. From the
meet-up, as I was discussing with him his problem of uncontrolled blood pressure due to a lack
of lifestyle modifications, I realized that he was uninformed about the disease. I also learned that
he was stressed after knowing that his blood pressure had been uncontrolled, even though he had
been using the prescribed medication. I also learned that he was experiencing financial strain
since he does not have a reliable source of income.
From the knowledge I sourced from evidence-based practice documents on the effective
management of hypertension, I learned that Orem’s self-care deficit theory is one of the most
effective approaches towards the effective management of hypertension. This is because it
involves communication and the initiation and practice of activities for maintaining life, health,
and wellbeing by the patient themselves (Khademian et al., 2020). I communicated with the
patient about the importance of lifestyle modifications in managing hypertension, and I learned
that he was fully willing to modify his lifestyle and adopt a healthy lifestyle. The main barrier
that I encountered when presenting the problem to the patient was his lack of knowledge about
hypertension. I utilized communication skills to ensure that he became knowledgeable about the
disease, which helped influence his decision to modify his lifestyle and strictly adhere to a
healthy lifestyle.
Impact of the Patient’s Problem
Evidence has shown that lifestyle modification is effective in the management of
hypertension and plays a significant role in controlling blood pressure for those on hypertensive
medication. Therefore, failure to modify one’s lifestyle and adopt a healthy lifestyle due to
factors such as lack of educational interventions, poor attitude, and lack of adherence to lifestyle
