1) Carbon has the unique property of catenation which helps in formation of long chains with
other atoms, carbon also has the property known as tetra-valent which means carbon can form
four bonds. Since donation or acceptance of four electrons is very difficult, the other way to
complete the octet is the sharing of electrons which results in the covalent bond formation.
Carbon also has only four valence electrons which makes the size of it’s atom really small, a
concept called electronegativity is found in atoms like carbon which makes the nucleus of the
carbon atom easier to keep a strong bond with other atoms since all electrons are very close to
the nucleus.

2) Ethanol has a hydrogen bond functional group attached to one of its carbon atoms, resulting in
the overall compound to be an alcohol. Whereas acetic acid consists of 2 carboxyl functional
groups attached to one of its carbon atoms, therefore the compound is a carboxylic acid.

5) Glycine belongs to the class of organic compounds in the group of aliphatic amino acids.
These are amino acids in which the amino group is attached to the carbon atom immediately
adjacent to the carboxylate group also known as an alpha carbon. Glycine is an alpha amino acid.
It is an amino acid that has a single hydrogen atom as its side chain. The special cases that it
belongs to are cysteine, glycine and proline.

6) The compounds that are composed of C and H atoms are known as hydrocarbons or organic
compounds. The properties of these compounds change when an H- atom is replaced by a group
of atoms known as a functional group. Example: An aldehyde group is represented by the CHO
group. The general formula of an organic compound that contains an aldehyde group has n which
represents the number of carbon carbon atoms in the compound. The suffix used for CHO group
is al. The chemical formulas of the first three members of an aldehyde group are methanal,
ethanal and propanal.
