Honors Biology - Protist Questions and
Complete Solutions
Explain why the kingdom Protista is a "catch-all" kingdom. ✅-Protists have a far
greater degree of diversity than any other eukaryotic kingdom.
-They are not members of the plant, animal, or fungi kingdoms.
-The kingdom Protista is made up of organisms that don't really belong anywhere else.

Describe general characteristics of protists (number of cells, how they obtain food, etc.).
✅-Protists can be unicellular or multicellular. (e.g. Kelp is multicellular.)
-Protists can be autotrophs (called algae), heterotrophs (protozoans and parasites), or
mixotrophs.

Describe the ways protists move and the structures used. ✅-Many unicellular protists
move by changing their shape, a process that makes use of cytoplasmic projections
known as pseudopods.
-This type of locomotion is called amoeboid movement.
-Many protists move by means of cilia and flagella, structures supported by
microtubules.
-Some protists are nonmotile and depend on air, water currents, and other organisms to
carry them around.
-These protists form reproductive cells called spores.

Explain how protists reproduce. ✅-Amoebas, and many other protists, reproduce by
mitosis.
-Under stress, some protists, like paramecia, can "remake" themselves through
conjugation. After conjugating, the cells then reproduce by mitosis. Conjugation is a
sexual process because new combinations of genetic information are produced.
-Many protists have complex sexual life cycles in which they alternate between a diploid
(spores) and a haploid (gametes) phase, a process known as alternation of generations.

Explain the importance of autotrophic protists, especially in terms of phytoplankton,
coral reefs, and recycling waste. ✅-About half of Earth's photosynthesis is carried out
by phytoplankton.
-Phytoplankton are an indirect source of nourishment for humans.
-Coral reefs, which are found in warm ocean waters throughout the world, provide food
and shelter to large numbers of fish and other organisms.
-A protist algae known as zooxanthellae provide most of the coral's energy needs by
photosynthesis.
-Coralline red algae also help to provide calcium carbonate to stabilize growing coral
reefs.
-Kelp is a source of food for sea urchins.
-Kelp forests also provide shelter for many marine species.
