King Tut Essay




Pharaoh Tutankhamen, better known as ‘King Tut’, is the youngest pharaoh in Ancient

Egyptian history. Succeeding his father, Akhenaten, he ruled for a decade, and reversed the

abrupt religious reforms of his father, resulting in his legacy being negated and ridiculed by his

successors and future generations. However, after the excavations in Egypt during the early 20th

century, there has been more insight into Tutankhamen’s lack of wealth, legacy, and reign. In

fact, he was hastily buried in a small tomb, which was originally designed for a private person,

rather than that of a pharaoh. Additionally, Akhenaten’s successors managed to delete all trace of

the Amarna kings, including Tut. However, attempting to erase his name, and his family’s name

from history resulted in having the opposite effect. Despite these efforts, information on

Tutankhamen has been found an analyzed through modern DNA technology. Comparing Tut to

ten other mummies who were suspected to be family members helped narrow down the search.

Three of the identified mummies were Amenhotep III, Yuya and Tuyu, parents of Amenhotep’s

great queen, Tiye; among the unidentified mummies was a male found in a mysterious tomb in

the Valley of the Kings, suggested to be Akhenaten or Smenkhkare, meaning that there was a
