PTSD Overview 2
The fight-or-flight sensation is something that naturally occurs within the body when
faced with a life or death situation. When a situation like this occurs, the body prepares to fight
or run in relation to the stimulus being provided. The aftereffects related to the situation may take
some time to overcome but most individuals will naturally overcome the sensations that come
with the activation of the fight-or-flight response. When an individual can not overcome the after
affects and continues to experience sensations related to the event by continuously
reexperiencing the events feelings, flashback memories, and severe anxiety, the medical term
used for this is Post-traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD. Patients who experience PTSD have
trouble coping with the fight-or-flight event making adjusting to the day to day self-care
extremely difficult. Those who experience this do not function well with symptoms often
worsening and lasting for months or years (Mayoclinic, 2020).
Background and Significance
Post-traumatic stress disorder patients have reoccurring feelings to respond to a
dangerous situation lasting month to years. The bodies normal fight-or-flight response allows for
an individual to prepare or completely avoid a dangerous situation and generally stops about a
month after the situation is over. Patients who experience PTSD continue to relive this sensation
through relived memories, nightmares, and anxiety. Patients who have these experiences may
have co-reoccurring conditions such as depression, substance abuse, as well as other debilitating
anxiety disorders. When experiencing flashbacks, memories, distressing thoughts, and physical
signs of stress for at least a month are the general symptoms leading to a PTSD diagnosis (NIH,
2020). According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs the prevalence of PTSD was
estimated to be 6.85% for lifetime statistical data while in 2002 it was estimated at 3.5%. Women
