Case Study#11. Mr. Smith is diagnosed with a cerebral embolus (stroke). Explain how hypoxia causes the
intracellular ion balance to change.
- A cerebral embolism is a blood clot that causes poor blood and oxygen flow to the brain
which results in a stroke. Hypoxia is oxygen deprivation to the tissues. Hypoxia results in a
decline of mitochondrial phosphorylation. This causes a reduction in the production of ATP.
There becomes an imbalance of ion changes that causes the failure of the sodium-potassium
pump and sodium-calcium. Sodium and potassium begin to build up in the cells wall which
pushes out potassium. This can be reversed and prevented if oxygen is restored to the brain.

pitches a perfect knuckle ball. The batter swings hard, and the ball directly hits Joey in the head.
What kind of contusion did Joey experience?
- Joey took a blow to the head which means he has a closed head injury. The injury will
appear to be the shape of the ball that struck him, and he will have internal bleeding. The
injury will rupture his blood vessels resulting in bleeding under the tissue. This can lead to
several health problems such as a concussion or hemorrhage.
