There are two modes of nutrition:
• Autotrophic mode - organisms prepare their own food from
simple inorganic substances
• Heterotrophic mode - organisms are dependent on other
organisms for their mode of nutrition
Green plants exhibit autotrophic mode of nutrition and prepare their
own food by the process of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the
process by which carbon dioxide and water combine in the presence of
sunlight and chlorophyll, producing glucose and oxygen as a byproduct.
This process takes place in three steps:
1. Absorption of light energy by chlorophyll
2. Carbon dioxide entering through stomata
3. Water absorbed by roots and transported to upper parts through
xylem
