, Effective early years provisions have key values that make it clear to what they go
out to achieve and how they want to do this by using the EYFS and in some cases
the birth to five matters document instead of the EYFS because some settings like
the fact that this document ‘provides comprehensive guidance, drawing on previous
guidance for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)’ (Early Years Coalition,
2021). As well as the principles that underpin the early years sector, a unique child,
positive relationships, enabling environments and learning and development. The
values and principles in the early years provisions mean that when supporting the
children in their learning and development they value the EYFS and following its
effective and successful criteria such as when it states ‘Effective pedagogy is a mix
of different approaches. Children learn through play, by adults modelling, by
observing each other, and through guided learning and direct teaching’ (DfE, 2021a,
p.10). The values and principles of the EYFS means that when working with children
in the early years provision we take the ideas of how we can be effective in making
sure that the development and learning of the children is the key focus, in making
sure that they learn from experiences and practical hands-on learning. Modelling as
well as child led play allows the children to learn from their experiences gained from
inside and outside of the provision and enforcing them to support their own critical
thinking, Bandura mentions four necessary conditions which are needed in the
modelling process, attention, retention, reproduction and motivation, By considering
these steps, an individual can successfully make the behaviour model of someone
else‘ (Nabavi, R, 2012, p.9). Making sure that we support all children with the
understanding that every child is unique and learns at different rates and will meet
early learning goals at different times which is highlighted in the statutory framework
for the early years foundation stage ‘Children develop and learn at different rates’
(DfE, 2021b, p.6). The characteristics of effective teaching in the development
matters non-statutory document highlights ways of supporting the children and how
we can be effective and supportive in supporting the children in their learning and
development through play and exploring, active learning and creating and thinking
critically. These principles mean that while we work with the children, we are doing
everything in our power to ensure that the children are receiving the most out of our
teaching. Both the values and principles strengthen my knowledge and
understanding of the early years provision through the way we structure our teaching
and the learning opportunities for the children that we offer as well as ensuring that
while we want to make sure that the children meet the early learning goals to make
sure that they are prepared and ready as well as ensuring they have gained enough
knowledge themselves to move forward in their learning. They also widen my
viewing on the early years provision on how important it is that we focus on
supporting the children at this stage to set them up to succeed in their future and no
matter what supporting them no matter what stage they are at as it is important to
meet the children’s individual needs and support them in their development through
assessing them and supporting them as shown in the early years handbook
‘assessment is based on a holistic view of what the child can demonstrate against
each ELG’ (DfE, 2021c, p.7).
In my own practice I have identified an area in which I wish to develop further to
better my practice as a teacher. Phonics is a key of the children’s learning and I
