¿WHAT IS BREAST CANCER?

The breasts consist of three main parts: lobules, ducts, and connective tissue.
The lobules are the glands that produce milk. The ducts are the tubes that carry
milk to the nipple. Connective tissue (made up of fibrous and fatty tissue)
surrounds and supports all parts of the breast.

Breast cancer is a disease in which cells in the breast multiply uncontrollably.
There are different types of breast cancer. The type of breast cancer depends on
which cells in the breast become cancerous.

Most breast cancers start in the ducts or lobules. Breast cancer can spread
outside the breast through blood vessels and lymphatic vessels. When breast
cancer spreads to other parts of the body, it is said to have metastasized.

This diagram of breast
cancer shows the location
of the lobules, lobules,
duct, areola, nipple, and
fat.

, COMMON TYPES OF BREAST CANCER

The most common types of breast cancer are:

 Infiltrating ductal carcinoma. Cancer cells start in the ducts and then
break out of the ducts and multiply in other breast tissues. These invading
cancer cells can also spread, or metastasize, to other parts of the body.

 Infiltrating lobular carcinoma. Cancer cells start in the lobules and then
spread from the lobules to nearby breast tissues. These invading cancer
cells can also spread to other parts of the body.

FACTORS INCREASE THE RISK OF HAVING BREAST CANCER

Some studies have shown that the risk of breast cancer is due to a combination
of factors. The main factors that influence a person's risk include being a woman
and getting older. Most breast cancers are found in women age 50 and older.

Lifestyles such as a sedentary lifestyle, obesity or taking hormones for long
periods of time have been associated with an increased risk.

Similarly, early onset of menstruation before age 12 and onset of menopause
after age 55, becoming pregnant for the first time after age 30, not breastfeeding,
and never having a pregnancy expose to women on hormones longer, which
increases the risk of breast cancer.
