1. RESEARCH PROJECT 10:
CORPORATE CULTURE AND JOB SATISFACTION
Research Area: Organisational Psychology
Project title: Corporate culture and job satisfaction
Project description
This research project focuses on the relationship between corporate (or
organisational) culture and employee job satisfaction.
Much of the literature about the relationship between employee job satisfaction and
corporate culture suggests there is a link between these two constructs.
Research has shown that job dissatisfaction results in higher levels of absenteeism
and voluntary turnover, ultimately impacting negatively on organisational success.
The majority of this research, however, has been conducted outside of Africa in
countries such as the United States and countries throughout Europe and Asia.
To address this limitation, this research project focuses on the relationship between
corporate culture and employee job satisfaction in the South African context.
You will be required to investigate the relationship between these constructs and
administer a questionnaire to respondents.
The questionnaire consists of scales to measure employee job satisfaction and the
corporate culture of the organisation for which they work.
The outcome of this project will be a full research report in which you report on
the correlation between corporate culture and employee job satisfaction in
the South African context.

RESEARCH PROJECT 10:
CORPORATE CULTURE AND JOB SATISFACTION
2. Introduction and orientation
Organisational behaviour is a large part of every working person’s life; in fact,
people spend more than one-third of their life at work.
In your studies of the Psychology of Work, you are exposed to many facets of what
the world of work is all about. Moreover, you are exposed to the people and how
they behave in organisations, ultimately making this working world a reality.
In an era characterised by the constantly changing realities of social, cultural,
economic and political uncertainties, research has shown the importance of a shift
away from a mere focus on the so-called bottom line, and profit margins
organisations need to attain in order to survive these challenges. Rather, today a
major focus of research in organisations shines the spotlight on employees
themselves, the workers who enable organisations to function successfully.
A large part of this research pertains to employee satisfaction with various facets of
their jobs. It might seem logical to say that an unhappy or dissatisfied worker is an
unproductive worker (or is it?).
Research has shown that job dissatisfaction results in higher levels of absenteeism
and voluntary turnover, ultimately impacting negatively on organisational success.
Most research of this nature has been conducted outside of Africa in countries such
as the United States and countries throughout Europe and Asia.
To address this ‘gap’, this research project focuses on employees’ satisfaction with
their jobs in South Africa. Specifically, this project focuses on researching the
relationship between corporate (or organisational) culture and employee job
satisfaction.
Much of the literature about the relationship between employee job satisfaction and
corporate culture suggests there is a link between these two constructs (i.e.,
variables).
