The first example of crime in the brief is hate crime. Hate crimes are crimes
motivated by hate, prejudice or bias based on disability, ethnicity, religion,
sexual orientation or transgender identity. These are known as the 5 strands.
The attack against the pride marchers is a hate crime because they were
targeted as a result of them supporting a group that openly accepts any
sexual orientation or gender identity. Other types of offences that are
considered as hate crimes include hoax calls, abusive messages, verbal abuse,
harassment and bullying. The typical victims of hate crimes are people that fall
under any of the 5 strands. The typical offender is anyone who holds a
prejudice against one of the 5 stands. In 2020 over 50% of hate crime offenders
were white. This type of crime is both criminal and deviant as it breaks laws
such as common abuse and is not socially acceptable in today's society. In
recent years the public awareness has increased as there are more campaigns
such as Stonewall. Additionally, it is talked about more in the media, there is
more power to prosecute and there are recent high profile cases that brought
attention to hate crimes such as the killing of George Flloyd. In the year ending
March 2020, there were 105,090 hate crimes recorded by the police in England
and Wales, an increase of 8% since 2019. An example of a hate crime case if the
Pulse gay nightclub shooting in Orlando. During the shooting there were 300
people in the building, the gunman Omar Mateen exchanged fire with a police
officer near the entrance and fired again when further police officers arrived.
He took hostages into a bathroom and ended up killing 49 people and injuring
dozens before he himself was shot by the police. There is a raised possibility
that he was conflicted about being gay himself so he lashed out.
