Dear Student
As part of this tutorial letter, we wish to inform you that Unisa has implemented a
transformation charter based on five pillars and eight dimensions. In response to
this charter, we have also placed curriculum transformation high on the agenda.
For your information, curriculum transformation includes the following pillars:
student-centred scholarship, the pedagogical renewal of teaching and
assessment practices, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and the infusion
of African epistemologies and philosophies. These pillars and their principles will
be integrated at both the programme and module levels, as a phased-in
approach. You will notice the implementation thereof in your modules, and we
encourage you to fully embrace these changes during your studies at Unisa.
1 INTRODUCTION
It is a pleasure to welcome you to the Introduction to Research Methodology in

different approaches that are specifically utilised in the study field of
Criminology.
This module will equip you with a solid knowledge base to understand the
research process and how to plan a research project in Criminology. This module
is a necessary requirement for you on second year level to prepare you for third
year research methodology in Criminology, which is far more advanced in
quantitative and qualitative research techniques, data and research findings.
Information supplied for the module will include tutorial matter such as the following:
Tutorial Letters 101, 201, and 301
Study guide

resources and assignments for this module. We urge you to read it carefully and
to keep it at hand when working through the study material, preparing the
assignments, preparing for the examination and addressing questions to your
lecturers.
In this tutorial letter (101), you will find the assignments and assessment criteria
as well as instructions on the preparation and submission of the assignments.
Please read Tutorial letter 301 – a general tutorial letter that includes other
important information regarding your studies – and SCHJALL/301/4/2021– the
tutorial letter for all departments in the School of Criminal Justice containing the
standardised referencing style and notes on plagiarism – in combination with this
Tutorial Letter 101 since they contain important general information about
distance learning and within a particular College.
Your general tutorial letter (301) should be viewed as an operational/academic

successfully completing your studies in Criminology at UNISA. It is a very
