, Introduction
The third novel of The African Trilogy, No Longer at Ease, was written by Chinua
Achebe in 1960. The story takes place as Nigeria undergoes a transition from British rule to
the country’s journey towards independence, stepping from colonialism into postcolonialism.
This is a period in which “binary oppositions (colonial vs. African) seem to be clashing,
revealing what Mudimbe calls ‘the strong tension between a modernity that often is an
illusion of development, and a tradition that sometimes reflects a poor image of a mythical
past’” (Obi Okonkwo as a 'postcolonial subject' in Chinua Achebe's 'No Longer At Ease',
2002).
“The colonization of Nigeria began with the arrival of the Christian missionaries in
Badagry in 1842” (Influence of Colonialism on Nigeria, 2020). Christianity ran hand-in-hand
with imperialism, as the missionaries used religion to manipulate the Nigerians into believing
the British colonizers would civilize them when their true intent was exploiting the country’s
natural resources. They forcefully occupied Nigeria in the late 19th century; a violent period,
ironically known as the ‘pacification’ of Nigeria. It was responsible for Nigerians losing their
political, social, and economic powers to the British protectorate government.
Chinua Achebe (1930-2013) was born in the Ibo village of Ogidi in south-eastern
Nigeria. “Although his parents had been converted to Christianity, his grandparents were still
firm believers in their traditional culture” (Zarrinjooee, 2016). Growing up under these
circumstances, the author had a special insight into colonialism and could portray the clash
between the old and the modern ways. Achebe pursued higher education at the University
College in Nigeria, where he was accepted on a scholarship. At first, he studied medicine,
but he changed his degree program to English, just like his novel’s protagonist.
