HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE UNIT 5 EXAMPLE ANSWER D1
D1 EVALUATE THE SUCCESS OF PROMOTING ANTI-DISCRIMINATORY PRACTICE FOR SPECIFIC
INDIVIDUALS WITH DIFFERENT NEEDS

HAVE YOU INCLUDED? COMPLETE?
Evaluate why it is important to promote anti-discriminatory practice in terms of the
successful outcomes for each individual

Consider and evaluate both the short and long term effects this could/will have

Ensure this relates to the situation of each selected individual to the possible effects of
discrimination, rather than merely providing a generic overview

It is important to promote anti-discriminatory practice for service users with varying needs as it promotes
empowerment as well as ensures that all service users receive high quality and fair health care. As well as
this anti-discriminatory practice helps to combat the negative effects of discrimination such as:
 For Nusrat, discrimination could impact her through a loss of self-esteem. In the short-term this can lead
to Nusrat withdrawing from social activities which in the long-term can affect her as she may lose a sense
of who she is such as not acting anymore with her drama group.
 For Brenda, this could mean her mental health may worsen in the long-term. Whereas in the short-term it
can mean that she could lose respect for service professionals which can mean she becomes stressed
about her health and wellbeing making her reluctant to seek support for her asthma and mental health.
 For Martin, discrimination could impact him due to a loss of confidence as well as a reluctance to seek
support and treatment. In the short-term this can lead to stress which can worsen his preexisting skin
condition and in the long-term it can mean that he may feel scared about coming back to work or finding a
job.

Anti-discriminatory care can empower individuals by allowing service users to choose their treatments. For
Brenda this is extremely successful in the short term as she will feel more empowered because she has
larger and more active role in the treatment of her asthma and mental health, which ensures professionals
acknowledge and consider her views and beliefs about the treatments. As an example, she may want to try
medication to help her mental health issues or asthma and by having equality in all health and social care
setting this would allow her to have her thoughts considered. In the long-term this can lead to additional long-
term successes including less stress which may have previously been triggered by mental health or
discriminatory practise. Because all of her treatments have been decided by her, if any changes need to take
place she will be told and have a say in it such as new medication or new therapies / social groups. However,
the ability to choose their own treatments can have some negative effects for example Brenda may make a
decision without considering doctors thoughts or doing research herself which in the short term can
significantly reduce her health and wellbeing such as worsening her asthma symptoms. In the long term this
can mean medication is harsher and can take a longer time to gain results.
