Cells of the Immune System—Student Worksheet

About This Worksheet

This worksheet complements the Click and Learn “Cells of the Immune

System” developed in conjunction with the 2007 Holiday Lectures on

Science, “AIDS: Evolution of an Epidemic.”

Author: Ann Brokaw, Rocky River High School, Rocky River, OH

Answer the following questions as you proceed through the activity slides.

Name one type of cell involved in each of the following processes:

Innate immunity: Innate immunity responses attack microbes indiscriminately. An example of a cell
involved in this process is monocyte

Adaptive immunity: Vertebrates have an additional and powerful immune response called adaptive
immunity. Examples of 2 cells involved in this process are B and T lymphocytes of white blood cells.

Both adaptive and innate immunity: macrophage and dendritic cell

Define innate immune system.

All animals possess a non-specific defense system called the innate system. Innate immunity responses
attack microbes indiscriminately.

, Where are the cells of the adaptive immune system found in humans? In the bone marrow and thymus.

Watch the video on slide 3 and answer the following.

a. How do B cells react to antigens? : B cells react to antigens by producing antibodies and when they
produce antibodies, thos antibodies go on to neutralize pathogens

Which cells conduct the immune system? Helper T cells

Which immune cells kill infected cells? Cytotoxic T cells.

What is the purpose of humoral immunity?

Humoral Immunity is a part of the immune system that is responsible for the generation of
antibodies by B cells. B cells secrete antibodies to directly neutralize viruses.

6. How does antibody specificity arise?

Each antibody is highly specific in binding to a particular molecular component of a
microbe. Antibody specificity arises because of sequence differences in the antigen binding
sites on the antibody. This antigen binding site is the part of the antibody that actually
attaches to the microbe.
