Access and community

HMNT-300IP

Distribution mechanism controls in music and episodic moving image come from not being

available to everyone. Social and Economic class is a factor in the availability of the artifact in the

community and cultures. There is still some content that is not available for distribution unless there is a

Subscription to either streaming, cable channels and etc.

Algorithms assist the streaming platforms to get certain music to the consumers. It is not like

traditional online categories of identity like gender, race, or age but is determined by the user's actions.

This creates an algorithmic identity. The consumer is given a song and they are given an option to give it

a thumbs up or a thumbs down. This is another distribution mechanism that controls what music is heard

on the platforms. This limits the consumer to the likeness of the songs they gave thumbs up. (Prey, 2017)

Censorship also controls and protects the audience from obscene, indecent, and profane broadcasts.

There is a federal law that regulates the censorship of the episodic moving image and music, by the FCC

Federal Communications Commission, however, this law does not include cable, satellite tv, and satellite

radio due to being subscription services (Obscene, Indecent and Profane Broadcasts, 2015).

Music is widely used on streaming services. These being subscription services they can cost money.

With music going virtual it leads to challenges on the supply and demand side (). On the supply side, the

main question is if the distribution of online music can be controlled by the offering party. On the demand

side, the consumer preference for buying digital goods is being analyzed. Questionings, are consumers

willing to pay directly for digital goods, or will the revenue be collected indirectly by other public or

private entities?

With YouTube, there are several stars now that have made it famous by putting their music on

YouTube. Justin Bieber is an example of starting out by putting his own music on YouTube. After he

was discovered he became very famous with several hits. This gives him the option of freedom to get his

music out there and to express his form of pop art to be heard by many and work out great for him. It is

the dream of many artists to be discovered this way.
